This talk examines the growth of the personality as a middle path between the outer and inner collective worlds.  From our parents and schools we are given the conventions and understandings of the outer collective, of our culture.  Just as language is essential to communicate, to live in social relationship with our group we need to take on the agreements of our culture.  Yet there is nothing new, nothing individual in adopting a collective only view.  To bring something unique into one's life requires creative involvement with the inner collective.  In the creative moment the ego stands between the two great collective worlds, the inner and the outer.  If this tension can be held to resolution, something unique and truly individual comes into being.  It is this that defines a living personality.  And it is possible through the opening to the experience of life as a whole and as dynamic.  As Jung puts it so succinctly, "Personality is Tao".

Robert Matthews is the current Vice-President of the Society, an Education academic at the University of Adelaide, a Jungian psychotherapist, and a trainee Analyst with the Zentrum in Zurich.
